The Award Announces $5000 Hole-in-One Prize at 2020 Golf Challenge Tournament

The Seventh Annual Duke of Edinburgh’s Golf Challenge takes place at Port Royal Golf Course on Friday, 25th September 12.30pm, Shot Gun Start. This is an exciting year for the Award’s Golf Challenge thanks to Freisenbruch-Meyer Bermuda sponsoring a $5,000 Hole-in-One cash prize on hole #13. We have had an amazing response from the community and the tournament is fully subscribed with 24 teams!

The Golf Challenge is one of the Award’s largest fundraisers and all the money raised goes directly to supporting the operating costs of the Award, providing the programme free of charge to more than 250 participants per year. This year the Award will be honoring the memory of Mrs. Ann Petley-Jones, a monumental supporter of the Award, who dedicated much of her time to raise the aspirations of young people here in Bermuda and around the world. A special plaque and prize will be given in her memory each year.

Development Director of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Fiona Holmes, explained, “The DofE Golf Challenge has always been a fun and entertaining afternoon of golf. The tournament includes a light lunch at registration and drinks on the course provided by Burrows & Lightbourn, Barritts, The Supermart and The Market Place. We are delighted to have the added excitement of the hole-in-one prize, sponsored by Freisenbruch-Meyer. This really does up the stakes in the tournament. It is fantastic to note that the tournament is fully subscribed with 24 teams. If anyone is interested in supporting the Award, there are tee sponsorships available for $300 each. This will pay for a participant to engage in the Award for 4 months of the year.”

Development Director, Fiona Holmes, continues by saying, “The Award’s Annual Raffle will be launched at the event and this year we have some fantastic prizes donated by some very generous local businesses. Some of the top prizes include a two night stay at Hamilton Princess including breakfast, an iPhone 11 donated by Digicel, dinner for two at Ascots, a $500 voucher towards a phone from One Communications, a bottle of Papa Seal Single Barrel Bermuda Rum donated by Goslings, a Rayclan Service Package, a round of golf at Port Royal, Turtle Hill, Ocean View and Belmont, gift certificates to the Supermart, Lilli Bermuda, Harry’s, Island Brasserie and U Sail Bermuda. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of everyone’s support for the Award.”

Chair of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Award Tri-Holder, Jovanna Douglas, concluded by saying, “On behalf of the Award Council, I would like to thank all of our generous donors, teams and players whose support will enable us to offer the Award Programme to young people in Bermuda ages 14 – 24 free of charge. This event couldn’t happen without the support of many organisations and individuals including the players, the teams, tee sponsors and event committee. Our thanks to our many volunteers and sponsors including, the Port Royal Golf Club, Bermuda Tees, Print Link, Bella Vista, Burrows & Lightbourn, Barritts, Market Place, The Supermart, Sportseller, Arnolds Markets and BGA.”

The Award develops well-rounded, global citizens who take pride in themselves and their communities. If you are interested in getting involved in the programme or would like to donate, please email fiona@theaward.bmor call 737-8959.
